Energy from deep within the Earth
The Siljan Ring is a meteorite crater that contains large quantities of non-fossil methane, that has been formed within and seeps out from deep within the earth. Methane is an organic molecule that consists of one carbon and four hydrogen atoms. The fact that it seeps out directly into the atmosphere in the Siljan ring is a climate threat that hitherto has not been given much attention. Igrene is mapping and measuring the natural methane emissions in the area and aim to take care of these resources in a responsible way. Using new technology, our objective is to transform the methane into pure carbon and hydrogen, without creating any CO2 in the process. In this way, Igrene intends to reduce the natural emissions of methane, and to make Sweden less dependent on imported valuable raw materials, that cannot be produced more cost-effectively or less carbon intensive in any other way. Both carbon and hydrogen will be much needed in the transition to a fossil-free society.
